Before You Begin

Please Read this Important Information

Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington (GSOSW) is committed to providing safe, quality program for girls as they participate in Girl Scouting. The criminal background check is another component of GSOSW’s volunteer placement procedure. The background check, conducted by IntelliCorp, includes criminal record searches of convictions, arrests, court records, inmate records and sex offender registries.

GSOSW has an expectation that volunteers who will be serving in the following capacities will complete a background check:

  • Any person that will have direct contact with girls.
  • Any volunteer with financial responsibility.
  • All service team members.
  • All persons 18 years or older that reside at a residence where meetings or events occur.

Disqualification from volunteer participation

The decision to exclude or limit an individual’s participation as a volunteer is solely within the discretion of GSOSW. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to, the nature and severity of the crime and the length of time since the criminal conduct occurred.

Confidentiality

GSOSW will maintain the confidentiality of all criminal background check information. Only your volunteer status and any restrictions - not the charges or details of your charges - will be released to key individuals of your service unit team.

Background Check Q&A

Why is GSOSW conducting background checks?
The safety of the girl is the most important consideration in the appointment of a volunteer. In order to safeguard the girls in our care, GSOSW has joined with Girl Scouts USA to develop a system for conducting criminal background checks on volunteers and all employed staff.

Will I be able to see the results of the background check?
No. All results from the background checks are sent directly to GSOSW and are not viewable or available from this portal.

What is required and how will the information be used?
Through the IntelliCorp website, the applicant must enter her/his name, date of birth and Social Security number. GSOSW does not receive this information. IntelliCorp will use the information to report on the criminal history of the individual. This report is used to determine the eligibility for a volunteer position with GSOSW. Your Social Security number on the criminal history records check shall be used for NO other purpose other than to make the process for conducting a background check more accurate. If you do not have a social security number, please contact the administrative assistant – background checks in the Portland service center (800) 338-5248 x 6814.

What if GSOSW receives criminal history results that indicate I have a criminal record?
The decision to exclude or limit an individual’s participation as a volunteer or paid staff member is solely within the discretion of GSOSW. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to, the nature and severity of the crime and the length of time since the criminal conduct occurred. GSOSW shall review each applicant’s record on a case-by-case basis. A special review process is available for any individual whose background check indicates a criminal record.

What information is included in the background check?
The background check includes criminal records searches of convictions, arrests, court record, inmate records and sex offender registries.

What if GSOSW receives criminal history results that I believe are incorrect?
According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to obtain a free copy of any consumer report from IntelliCorp within 60 days of the day when any adverse action is taken against you based on the report. You also have 30 days to report and dispute the results you believe to be incorrect or inaccurate to IntelliCorp, who is the reporting source. GSOSW will rely upon the information contained in the criminal history report until a corrected report has been provided.

What do I put in the reference field during the background check?
You will need to enter your phone number. This will help us match your record with your Girl Scout registration.
