To the Moon and Back: Girl Scout STEM Opportunities


Girl Scouts have two stellar opportunities this summer, thanks to the "Reaching for the Stars" grant from NASA in partnership with the SETI Institute!

Astronomy Adventure at Pine Mountain Observatory/University of Oregon

JULY 10–14, 2018
Applications due February 1!

We’re introducing an exciting new Destination for girls to join astronomers in observing the night sky while camping in the beautiful Deschutes National Forest of Central Oregon, thanks to the “Reaching for the Stars” grant from NASA and in partnership with the SETI Institute. An intimate group of 10 high school Girl Scouts will learn how to operate mountain-top telescopes, collect and manipulate data into an image, and enjoy space science activities that will utilize STEM skills and possibly inspire a career in astronomy. Girl Scout Astronomy Club Training at Goddard Space Flight Center

JUNE 24-29, 2018
Applications due March 1!

Teams from ten selected Girl Scout councils—made up of two high school Girl Scouts (entering grades 9, 10 OR 11 in Fall 2018), one Girl Scout volunteer, and one amateur astronomer each—will get the opportunity to take part in an intensive weeklong space science training session June 24–29 at NASA’s premier research facility in Greenbelt, Maryland. Participants will learn how to start their own astronomy club back home and have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect directly with NASA scientists.
