This training will help you better understand the behaviors you see
in youth from ages 12 to 18 who may be developing a mental health
concern or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis and will
give you tools you can use as well as an opportunity to practice those
skills. This certification course uses role-playing and simulations to
demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and
connect persons to the appropriate professional, peer, social, and
self-help care. It focuses on helpful responses (and how they differ
from unhelpful responses) to situations you might encounter.
Participants must be able to complete two hours of pre-class
training online at their own pace prior to the live session as
well as attend the live session from 10 a.m.5 p.m.
(including two 15-minute breaks and a break for lunch).
First-aiders do not take on the role of professionals and do not
diagnose or provide any counseling or therapy. Instead, the program
offers concrete tools and answers key questions like, "What do I
do?" and "Where can someone find help?" This training
is made possible through a generous grant to Girl Scouts of Oregon and
Southwest Washington.
