This training has both an online and an in-person component, and
participation in both is mandatory to receive credit for
participating. Upon successful completion of this training and pending
instructor approval, you will be qualified to take Girl Scouts out on
canoes and kayaks at GSOSW properties and other flatwater locations
deemed safe by the qualified individual (valid for three years).
Participants will complete a swim test and frequently be in the water
with and without a flotation device during the in-person skills
portion of this training.
Physical Considerations
- Please complete the GSOSW Small Craft
Safety Readiness Assessment and Attestation survey before
registering to ensure that you can safely participate in this
training.
- This training is a rescue course that requires
existing paddling skills; it is not a basic paddling training.
- GSOSW kayaks have a weight capacity of 275lbs.
- Volunteers weighing over 275lbs are welcome to take this Small
Craft Safety training without the kayak portion and earn
qualification for canoes only.
- The paths to and from the
boat docks at camp are rough and uneven.
- This training
involves lifting, carrying, tipping, and recovering canoes and
kayaks in and out of the water.
- Participants will get wet
and stay wet for extended periods of time throughout the
training.
Accommodations
- This training takes place over two full days
- Participants will be allowed to stay overnight on camp property,
and will be provided mats to sleep on the floor of the lodge.
- Meals are not provided for this training, and participants will
need to supply their own food. In most cases, a refrigerator and
microwave will be available.
Participant Information
- This training will take place from 9 am 6/6 to 2 pm 6/7.
This training will take place at Whispering Winds.
- A
confirmation email with additional details will be sent out a few
days before the training.
- Participants need to be present
for an entire course in order to receive credit for the training.
Late arrival participation will be evaluated by the trainer.

Prerequisite Training Requirements
- If the online coursework is not completed before the
training, you will not be able to attend the training, and you will
not be certified or refunded.
- Adult and Child/Pediatric
First Aid and CPR/AED certification on file with GSOSW.
Registration, Cancellation & Refund Information
- Registration closes on 5/24.
- Request for
cancellation must be submitted via email to answers@gsosw.org
by this date in order to receive a refund less this training's
cancellation fee ($25).
- No refunds will be given after the
registration deadline.
- GSOSW reserves the right to cancel
an event due to low enrollment or other circumstances which would
make the event non-viable. If GSOSW cancels an event, registrants
will be notified and offered a full refund.
