Alexi’s project aimed to address loneliness by helping to form a meaningful intergenerational connection with the residents of a local retirement community. Alexi noticed that many elderly citizens do not have family nearby to visit them. Because of her strong interest in psychology, she researched the causes and effects of elderly loneliness and developed an Advent project to connect seniors with their faith, as well as connecting them to the younger generation. She was able to educate peers and a younger Girl Scout troop on this topic and trained them to make calendars. She also arranged for the younger Girl Scout troop to visit the retirement community, deliver the calendars, and spend some quality time connecting with the residents. With the help of a younger Girl Scout troop and her school's Service Club, the “Advent Calendar Connection” is set to become an annual event.
Gold Award Girl Scouts show remarkable dedication to improving their communities and the world.
