After studying and researching the reasons for a decrease in the bee population, Zoey learned that it was due not only to habitat loss but also to mites and disease within the hives. To provide a safe place for bees to live and thrive, bee boxes need replaceable tubes that must be cleaned at least once a year. With the help of her woodworking shop at school, she held several workshops to educate her community on the value of bees and taught them how to build bee boxes with replaceable tubes. Her team also built and installed bee boxes around Hermiston and created and distributed pamphlets with instructions on how to build and clean bee boxes. Her project will be sustained through a combination of community partnerships, education, and long-term planning.
