To improve literacy and a love of reading in young children, Kaitlyn established a reading buddy program. She recruited and trained a team of volunteers from her high school and organized a program that allowed 20 first and second-graders to read with a buddy once a week for 3 months. Their teacher indicated that the program was well-received and helped students improve their reading skills. Kaitlyn trained two underclassmen to take over the program next year. In addition, she talked about her program at a state-wide conference of high school student government officers.
