Inspired by a family member, Smarani knew that students with Autism Spectrum Disorder would benefit from the existence of a special room at school to meet their needs. Working closely with the school and knowledgeable adults, she designed and constructed a sensory room at her local middle school. The room’s opening day was profiled by local media, and Smarani’s efforts to educate and advocate for autistic students have been publicized throughout the school district.
