Maylie recognized that children need continuous literacy learning and sought to connect students' love of reading with enriching the lives of residents at a senior residential facility who are prone to illness and unable to connect with community members in person. She secured donated tablets and, with the help of her volunteers, created a library of video and audio books read by 4th- and 5th-grade students who wanted to practice and improve their reading skills. She helped the students hone their skills and gave advice on how to read well for being recorded. Once the libraries were complete and uploaded to the tablets, she donated them to the retirement home and presented (and provided) instructions on how to use them. She also created a pamphlet on replicating the project and presented it to another group in Boise, Idaho.
Maylie is an Emerald Circle Scholarship recipient. Congratulations, Maylie!
